Excerpts from the book,-- Class, Ethnicity, and Democracy in Nigeria: The Failure of the First Republic. By Larry Jay Diamond

"Expressions of ethnic antagonism were building to such intensity that even some Northern officials became alarmed, and on 24th March the Sardauna warned against the victimization of non-Northerners living in the Region. But that same day the Kano NA gave more than 2000 traders 48 hours to pack up and leave the Sabon Gari market; Igbo eviction from Katsina, Gusau, and Funtua were reported; and only the intervention of the Sardauna prevented a mass eviction in Kano (Mackintosh, 1966 556-7; Nwankwo and Ifejika, 1969: 54).
Perhaps recalling the mass ethnic violence in Kano ten years previously, Igbo leaders became visibly concerned. A delegation of Igbos from Kano, Kaduna and Zaria visited President Azikiwe and asked him to intercede. Praising their restraint in the face of provocation, he urged them to be law-abiding and to seek a judicial remedy. From the Eastern Region, Dr G.C. Mbanugo, Chairman of the NCNC Working Committee there, cabled the Prime Minister asking him to act, ‘and Sir Abubakar, with charismatic calm, said he hard heard of no evictions and asked Dr Mbanugo to verify his facts’ (Mackintosh, 1966: 557)."
